2015 Kentucky Derby Entries, Post Positions, & Odds

It’s Official, American Pharoah still has plenty to prove in the upcoming 141st running of the $2 million Kentucky Derby (Grade I) Race on Saturday, May 2, 2015, but that did not stop Mike Battaglia from making the outstanding Colt the morning line favorite heading into the greatest two minutes in sports.  American Pharoah was set as the first choice a 5-2 favorite to win the 141st running of the Kentucky Derby. American Pharoah wasn’t trapped in the one slot, but he will try to get a good trip from the outside No. 18 post, in hopes to finish with the garland of Roses this Saturday, May 2nd.

American Pharoah has been training well over his morning workouts at Churchill Downs, were many onlookers were able to see a curious and confident Colt galloping out unseen times over the track. The Arkansas Derby winner and the son of Pioneer of the Nile has been impressive in his last four starts since his Maiden Race, which has many people wondering can anyone in the field beat this athletic Colt. He has won 4 out of 5 career starts by an average of 5 1/2 lengths, including the Arkansas Derby which he won by 8 lengths handily.

Dortmund was the second choice at 3-1 and drew the favorable No 8 post, He’s coming off his wire to wire first place finish in the Santa Anita Derby in Santa Anita Park on April 4, 2015.  Trained by Bob Baffert, Dortmund is undefeated as a Colt with six career starts.  Baffert is also the trainer for the Kentucky Derby favorite American Pharoah.

“Believe me, when their horse is going to the gate, everybody has tunnel vision,” said Baffert. “Nobody cares about who’s next to them.” When they turn for home, I don’t care who it is in front.” Baffert said. “My thing is to run one-two.”

Carpe Diem, win be starting from the No. 2 position and is the third choice at 8-1. The colt is trained by Todd Pletcher and has a nice pedigree, but it will interesting to see how he handles the inside and the large crowd on Satuday.

Trainer Todd Pletcher has four Colts in Carpe Diem, Itsaknockout, Materiality, and Stanford, while  Bob Baffert is still looking for his fourth Kentucky Derby winner since 2002 with either American Pharoah, or Dortmund.  Other horses getting consideration to win the race on May 2 is 15-1 Frosted, 12-1 Firing Line, and 20-1 International Star.  This is probably one of the deepest fields in the Kentucky Derby since 2007 when jockey Calvin Borel won on Street Sense.
