College Football: Clemson Rises to the Occassion

A mass of humanity in orange and white celebrated on the field of Memorial Stadium. It was the ACC’s premier game. A battle of heavyweights in college football as the Florida State Seminoles squared off against Clemson in Death Valley. Clemson used a strong 4th quarter to overcome a defensive game to prevail 23-13. The last time the Tigers were 9-0 was 1981 when they won their lone national championship.

The win positions the Tigers at the forefront of the college playoff race. Clemson’s remaining schedule seats them up nicely as all the teams they play have losing records at the moment, a combined record of 9-18. Clemsons 12th straight win clinched them the ACC Atlantic title. The ACC championship game now a waits. Clemson will be the favorite against any team from the Costal division.

”We won the Kentucky Derby tonight but we want to win the Triple Crown” Swinney said ,”I’ve been voting us No. 1 for three weeks, y’all are just catching up.” Swinney also commented on the college football outlook, ‘It’s good to control our destiny. It’s good to be in the driver’s seat. ‘We just have to keep our hands on the wheel and not get distracted.

Florida State (7-2, Atlantic Conference 5-2) got off to a strong start with huge runs in the first half by Dalvin Cook. Cook broke loose on the second snap of the game for a 75 yard run in the first quarter. Sean Maguire started for FSU for the second straight game for the injured Everett Golson. He could not produce on high level against one of the nation’s top defenses His stats were 16 of 29 for 164 yards and no touchdowns with an Int. The game heading into halftime was tied at 13.

Clemson (9-0, 6-0) made adjustments at the half and the defense came out on fire. Cook had his explosive first half but in the second half the offensive line was dominated. Cook ran for 194 yards, but only 37 came in the second half.  Besides Cook’s TD the Clemson defense allowed just two field goals the rest of the way.

Heisman Trophy candidate Deshuan Watson had another strong outing. He had 297 yards completing on 66% of his passes with a touchdown. He kept FSU defense off their game adding 107 rushing yards. Standout running back Wayne Gallman came to join Deshuan in the 100 yard day adding 103 yards and a touchdown. Jordan Leggett had 101 receiving yards.

Clemson now has two top 25 wins on their record. No one should be sleeping on the Tigers. After years Swinney has made a National Championship contender. The win against Florida State is huge for a team that was known for losing the big game. But these Tiger players will leave the past in the past and focus on the final few games before heading into bowl season. At this point it seems that bowl game will be in the playoffs.
