Bulldogs Remain Undefeated
The Male Bulldogs came into Friday night’s game undefeated and off a big one point win against the Trinity Shamrocks. However Friday night the Bulldogs would host their rival, the Manual Crimson, in a crowd of over 4,000 in Maxwell Stadium. The Bulldogs had not defeated the Crimson in four years and were determined to finally get over the hump. The Great American Rivalry game would also be on Male’s Senior Night, which included the final game for some outstanding talent on the Bulldogs football team.
The Bulldogs would begin the game on offense, as the Crimson had deferred the coin toss. Male’s Zackery Smith would return the opening kick off 53 yards for the Bulldogs.Smith’s return would set up a 25 yard touchdown pass from Male’s quarterback, Davis Mattingly, to a wide open Keron Wakefield with 10:06 remaining in the 1st quarter. After Male’s initial scoring drive neither team was able to put up anymore points and the score at the end of the 1st quarter would be 7-0 Male.
In the second quarter it was more of the same for both teams, as the defenses forced a lot of empty trips for both offenses. Then Mattingly was able to connect with receiver Ethan Britt for a 20 yard touchdown pass with 4:53 remaining in the 2nd quarter, making the score 14-0 Male. However the Crimson offense managed to put some points on the board late, after a 45 yard touchdown pass from quarterback Tim Comstock to Jaelin Carter with 1:49 remaining in the 1st half. Then Male would score after just three plays, on a 24 touchdown pass from Mattingly to Smith with 30 seconds left in the first half. The score at half time would be 21-7 Male, as Manual managed to get just negative 6 yards rushing.
The second half would be more entertaining as Manual would open up the 3rd quarter with the ball. Manual’s Comstock would fumble on the Crimson’s second play of their opening drive and Male’s Zach Hall would recover the football. Male was unable to capitalize on the Manual fumble and would punt the ball back to the Crimson. Comstock would then throw an 85 yard touchdown pass to receiver William Blackford with 9:50 remaining in the 3rd quarter. Davis Mattingly would fumble the football to Manual on the next Male drive, on what appeared to be an incomplete pass, with 7:45 remaining in the 3rd quarter. The score at the end of the 3rd quarter would be 21-14 Male.
The 4th quarter would be the most exciting part of the game, as Male opened up the quarter with the football. Both Manual and Male’s defenses contained both offenses until late in the 4th quarter. Manual’s offense would keep trying to throw the football and take advantage of the size its receivers had over the Male secondary. With 4:16 to go in the 4th quarter Comstock would throw a three yard touchdown pass to Eric Niemann, to tie the game at 21. Then with 3:39 remaining Male’s Ellis Cain would score on a 44 yard touchdown run, to make the score 28-21 Male. The Male defense would get some huge plays from James Todd and Kamron Cuf, as the Bulldogs would stop the Crimson on 4th down with 1:44 remaining in the game. Manual did not have any timeouts remaining and Male would run the clock out to make the final score 28-21 Male.
The MVP of the Great American Rivalry series stated:” I knew I was going to score when I had seen that they had five defenders in the box and I could outrun the linebacker”, said Ellis Cain on his big touchdown run. “Beating Manual for the first time in four years is definitely my biggest moment as a Bulldog and it is an honor to be a part of one of the greatest rivalries in America.” Male is now officially the KHSAA 6A Football District Champs and will close out the season at Christian Academy next week. As for Manual they will close out their season in a home against Eastern High School next week.
