Isaac Murphy Kentucky’s Unsung Hero

Who comes to mind when you think of the greatest athletes who call the state of Kentucky their home?  Greats like Muhammad Ali, Pee Wee Reese, and Daryl Griffith easily enter the mind.  Then there’s other greats such as Wes Unseld, Jim Bunning, Mary Meagher and Dan Issel too.  One of the greats that some may have never heard about before is considered by many to be the greatest jockey of all-time in American History. He was the Michael Jordan of horse racing.   Have you ever heard of the name of Isaac Burns Murphy?  Murphy was born in Frankfort, KY. in 1861. In 1955 Murphy was the first jockey elected to the National Thoroughbred Hall of Fame. He rode in a total of 11 Kentucky Derby’s and was the first jockey to win the historic race three times. Only 8 other Jockeys in the history of winning the Kentucky Derby has accomplished winning the race 3 times or more.  The Kentucky Derby winning mounts were upon Buchanan (1884), Riley (1890), and Kingman (1891).  Murphy had a 44% winning rate. That’s 4 out of 10 races for any of you keeping count.  When Gamblers tried to entice Murphy with bribes during the 1879 Kenner Stakes, Murphy refused to let the champion horse he was on Falsetto lose the race.  Isaac Murphy was a man of loyalty and integrity. His death in 1896 was controversial because his cause of death is listed as being from pneumonia,  but some people believe he died from having problems with making weight during his racing career. Mr. Isaac is currently buried next to racing horse legend Man O’War at the horse farm in Lexington. Also to celebrate Murphy ‘ s life the city of Lexington, Ky has recently broken ground on land where Murphy ‘s house once laid to build Isaac Murphy Memorial Art for one of Kentucky’s Unsung Racing Legends.  Check the video below to learn more.
