Bulldogs Dominate Again
Friday night’s high school football game at Maxwell stadium would be highly anticipated, as the Male Bulldogs hosted the Ballard Bruins at home. Male came into Friday’s game with a record of 4-0, winning all of its games by an average of 42! Ballard came into Friday’s game with a 3-2 record, recently losing an away game to Manual 13-7.
The game would begin with Male receiving the kickoff from Ballard, running back Ellis Cain would rush for 14 yards on the 1st play of the game for the Bulldogs. Male’s 1st possession would end with a failed 4th down conversation as 10:21 remained in the 1st quarter. The Bulldog defense would have two tackles for a loss by linebacker Larry Burns and defensive end Anthony Cummings. The Male offense would get the ball back and quarterback Davis Mattingly would throw a 31 yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Zackery Smith. The Bulldogs would convert on the extra point and gain a 7-0 lead on Ballard with 7:31 to go in the 1st quarter. The score at the end of the 1st quarter would be 7-0 Male.
In the 2nd quarter Ballard’s quarterback, Kenshawn Washington, would throw an interception to Male’s cornerback James Todd with 9:40 left in the 1st half. Male would score again off a 2 yard pass from Mattingly to wide receiver Marcus Clark, making the score 14-0 Male with 7:38 remaining in the half. Then Ballard’s Washington would throw a 65 yard pass to wide receiver Isaiah Collins, giving the Bruins their first touchdown in the game with 6:35 left in the 1st half. The score would be 14-7 Male, but Male’s Cain would quickly change that. Cain would run the ball three times for Male, scoring a touchdown on his third run making the score 20-7 Male with 5:41 remaining in the 1st half. Male would score again from another Mattingly pass to Clark for 17 yards, giving the Bulldogs a 28-7 lead at half time.
The Male defense made sure in the 2nd half they didn’t make another a mistake. Male’s Larry Burns would have a tackle for a loss with 10:32 remaining in the 3rd quarter. Male’s Clark would score on a 61 yard run for another Bulldog touchdown with 6:09 remaining in the 3rd quarter. Then Larry Burns would intercept a pass from Ballard’s Washington with 5:54 remaining in the 3rd quarter. Male’s Mattingly would throw a 20 yard pass to Smith for another Bulldog touchdown, with 5:36 remaining in the 3rd quarter. Male would convert on the two point conversation making the score 43-7 Bulldogs. Ballard’s Washington would score late in the 4th quarter to make the score 43-13 Male. However the final score would be 50-13 Bulldogs, as Male’s Devin Gentry would score the last touchdown in the game.
Male easily moves to 5-0 on the season and will play Meade County next Friday at home. Ballard will play another away game against Eastern next Friday. The Bulldogs also still have to play St. X, Trinity, and rival Manual in the coming weeks. Whether Male will win the KHSAA 6A State Championship this season has yet to be determined, but the Bulldogs look very impressive so far in this season.
