Barnett Gets Buckets
The Warren Central Lady Dragons are coming off an impressive 74-57 win over Monroe County on Monday, giving them their eighth win on the season. The Dragons are only 8-6 through the 1st half of the season, but are looking to make a run during the 2nd half of the season. A huge part of that potential run could be the outstanding scoring ability of junior shooting guard Tia Barnett.
Barnett can flat-out score, already eclipsing 1000 points in her sophomore year last February. “I believe Tia’s overall skills and willingness to score are what make her standout,” said her head coach Joe Hood. Hood also informed Analyzed Sports that if Tia got to the free throw line more her point totals could be higher, as she shoots nearly 80% from charity stripe. If Tia takes that advice other teams could be in even more trouble when defending Tia, who has already had two 30 point games this season.
Tia Barnett is definitely a great talent and her ceiling is very high if she can keep improving on her game. So with that said here is Analyzed Sports conversation with Ms. Tia Barnett.
Analyzed Sports: What leads to you having these big scoring games? Do you come in with the mind state of being a scorer or are do you feel the need to take over when you feel like the team is down?
Tia: Usually I like to let the game come to me, but when I feel the team is down I try to become more aggressive on offense.
Analyzed Sports: The team is coming off a big win against Monroe County, What do you all ( the Lady Dragons) need to do to keep the momentum going?
Tia: I feel like if we just keep on getting better at communicating on the court, especially on defense, then we can continue to become better as a team.
Analyzed Sports: What are some aspects of your game you need to continue working on?
Tia: I need to work on finishing on the right side of the basket on the offensive end and on defense I feel like I need to keep working on pressuring the ball handler.
Analyzed Sports: Who is your favorite female athlete?
Tia: Maya Moore is my favorite female athlete, I feel like she is an amazing role model for young girls like me. I have watched her since she played at UConn and I have been in love with her game ever since.
As for what snack gives the high scoring Tia Barnett going before each game, “I must have my McDonald’s Grilled wrap and large fries before each game”, says Tia. I am sure coach Hood makes sure she gets it too, especially with the scoring ability that Tia Barnett has. The Lady Dragons will take on Warren East tomorrow night in a home game at 6PM. It will be Warren Central’s first District game and could be the next game they need to start a run in the 2nd half of the season.
